Physical Challenges

It's hard to believe that three weeks have passed since I last posted - it seems like a blur.  Each week brings new challenges as walking has gotten more difficult for Scott.  He walks with a cane regularly and by the afternoon/evening, he needs to move to a wheelchair.  The right side of his body just has trouble communicating with the left side of his brain.  This week, we hired a supportive home care service through Atlantic Health.  This allows him to get services into the home such as PT, OT, and speech.  A nurse will also come regularly to check on him at home and we can have help from a home health aide when needed.  Ron spent time last week and this week researching a chair lift for the stairs to the bedroom/bathroom floor and a ramp from the driveway into the front door.   We hope these will be installed by Friday since stairs are the biggest challenge for him (and us!).

We decided not to continue the Avastin infusion because it wasn't helping to ease the deficits in speech or motor.  We did increase his steroid dose to try to help.  He is still scheduled for an MRI on April 11th and we will decide the path ahead once we get the results of that MRI.

We live one day at a time - something we have done for a long time now.  Each day is a new day to smile, laugh, be together, and enjoy the spring weather (sometimes easier said than done though - sometimes it's good to cry too). We all help out - including the kids.  It's not something you ever want kids to have to experience but they are so helpful with Scott and me.  I am one very lucky Mom!

The sermon at my church on Easter Sunday touched on how life experiences that are difficult happen for a reason even if we can't see it at the time.  I hope this is true and that all the experiences and suffering that are a result of this battle with brain cancer will help to shape people and the world around us in a positive light.  Scott has touched a lot of lives - he is such an amazingly positive and good-hearted person who always puts others first and if that rubs off on all of us, even just a little bit, the world is a better place because of him.
